Achyranthes is the root of a plant in the amaranth family. Atractylodes and Alisma are both rhizomes — the first from an aster-family herb, the second from water plantain, a marsh plant. Codonopsis, whose root goes by the common name poor man's ginseng, comes from a bellflower relative. Polygonatum is the rhizome of Solomon's seal, and Curculigo the rhizome of a small yellow-flowered plant from the tropics of Asia. Discorea is the tuber of a wild yam, a starchy root crop.

Barks, twigs and stems account for three more. Moutan is the root bark of the tree peony, a garden shrub grown for its flowers long before anyone dried its bark. Pheliodendron is the inner bark of the Amur cork tree. Mulberry twing — the panel's own spelling — refers to the young twigs of the mulberry, the same tree whose leaves feed silkworms.

Fruits, bulbs and berries round the blend out. Lycium fruit is the goji berry, the small red fruit now sold on its own as a dried snack. Schizandra is a red berry from a woody vine, named in Chinese for tasting of five flavours at once. Cnidium is the small ribbed fruit of a plant in the carrot family. Fritillaria is the bulb of a lily relative.

The last three entries are Anemarrhea, a rhizome from a grass-like plant of northern China; Scrophulana, the root of a figwort; and Scutellaria, the root of a skullcap, a mint-family plant. A number of these names, those three included, are printed on the card in spellings that differ a little from the standard botanical ones, and we have kept the card's spelling throughout rather than tidy it. One entry, hoeien, we have not been able to match to a botanical name with any confidence at all, so it is reproduced exactly as printed and left at that.
