4. Damiana leaf — 2,167 mg. Leaf of Turnera diffusa, a low shrub with yellow flowers growing wild through Mexico, southern Texas and the Caribbean. Dried, it has a bitter, faintly fig-like smell, and it has long been taken as a tea.
5. Guarana — 2,312 mg. Seed of a climbing Amazonian vine, roasted and milled. Caffeine occurs in it naturally and in quantity — several times what an equal weight of coffee bean holds — which is how it became the base of Brazil's national soft drink.

7. Maca — 2,245 mg. A brassica, related to radish and turnip, grown for its root on the Peruvian altiplano at altitudes where very little else survives. Harvest is dried, then milled into flour.
8. Vitamin B12 — 2,414 mg. Cobalamin, unique among the vitamins in being built around a metal atom — cobalt sits at the centre of the molecule. 9. Vitamin C — 2,310 mg. Ascorbic acid. Humans are among the few mammals that cannot synthesise it, so all of it has to come from food; citrus gets the credit, but blackcurrants and bell peppers are richer per gram.
