The facts panel on the side of the jar defines a single capsule as one serving of 2,400 mg, and puts six of those servings in the jar. A closer look at the botanicals

Fifteen lines make up the blend. Several are foods before they are supplement ingredients, and the notes below simply say what each one is and where it grows. They are background on the plant, not a statement about what this product does for anybody.

The roots. Dang Gui is the root of Angelica sinensis, a carrot-family plant grown in the cool highlands of western China and one of the most heavily used herbs in Chinese herbal practice. Deng Sen Extract is a phonetic spelling of dang shen, a sweetish bellflower-family root that appears in home cooking pots as readily as in herbal shops. Atractylodes is a rhizome from the daisy family, dried in slices. Pueraria Lobata is kudzu — a climbing vine from East Asia whose starchy root has been eaten and thickened with for centuries, and which most Americans now know as the plant covering roadside banks across the south. Panax Ginseng is Asian ginseng, a slow crop that is usually left in the ground for four to six years before it is lifted; the NCCIH page on Asian ginseng is a readable general primer. Licorice is the root of Glycyrrhiza, better known as a sweet and a flavouring, and the NCCIH overview of licorice root sets out general background including who is usually advised to be cautious with it.

The fruits, bark and brambles. Goji Extract comes from the small scarlet berry of Lycium barbarum, sold dried by the bag in grocers across northern China and in health-food aisles here. Cinnamon Bark is exactly what it says — the rolled inner bark of the cinnamon tree, the same material ground for baking. Rubus is the bramble genus, the one that gives us raspberries and blackberries; the jar does not narrow it to a species.

The enzyme. Superoxide Dismutase is an enzyme present in living cells, and it is one of the few non-plant entries on the panel. The word Dismutase also appears on its own, earlier in the list, so the panel carries it twice.

The lines printed unusually. Three entries are worth reading carefully. Condonopsis is spelled that way on the jar; the recognised botanical genus is Codonopsis, the same bellflower root as dang shen. Synensis stands alone with no genus in front of it — in botanical Latin sinensis means “of China” and normally trails a genus name, so the panel leaves that one open. Cornus Cuscuta runs as a single line, though Cornus (Asiatic dogwood fruit) and Cuscuta (dodder seed) are two separate botanicals in traditional practice. Proprietary Formula closes the list and marks the point where the manufacturer stops itemising.

A proprietary blend is a permitted way of labelling: the maker must name what went in, but is not required to publish how the total splits between the ingredients. Taking it

One capsule is one serving, and there are six in the jar. That much the facts panel states plainly.

Timing, and the minimum gap the manufacturer sets between capsules, are printed on the directions and caution panel that wraps round the side of the jar. Read that panel and follow it exactly. It was written by the distributor for the product you are holding and it overrules anything written anywhere else, this page very much included.
