What it is

NOW Foods Thyroid Energy™ is a dietary supplement sold as a bottle of 180 veg capsules. The Supplement Facts panel sets one serving at two veg capsules and declares 90 servings in the bottle, so the 180 capsules divide evenly into 90 complete two-capsule servings. Nine ingredients are declared by amount; seven carry a % Daily Value and two are marked with a dagger for “Daily Value not established”. The panel names NOW Foods of Bloomingdale, Illinois as the manufacturer, and every figure here is transcribed from this bottle’s printed panels.

Because a serving is a pair rather than a single capsule, the count on the front of the label is always double the number of servings inside — and at the label’s direction of one serving a day, 90 servings works out at 90 days from one container. This product is listed under Supplements.

What’s inside

All amounts below are per two-capsule serving, not per capsule. The single largest declared amount — L-tyrosine at 1 g (1,000 mg) — is the only ingredient here measured in grams at all: it is eight times the 125 mg of ashwagandha extract and forty times the 25 mg of zinc, while four rows are measured in micrograms. A panel that spans one gram down to 50 micrograms is worth going through in groups.

The two rows without a percentage. L-Tyrosine (Free-Form) is listed at 1 g (1,000 mg). Tyrosine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in protein foods such as cheese, soy and nuts; “free-form” means it is supplied as the single amino acid rather than bound into a protein chain. Beside it sits Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) (Root and Leaf) Standardized Extract at 125 mg, specified as a minimum 2.5% withanolides. Ashwagandha is a shrub long used in Ayurvedic preparations in India; withanolides are the marker compounds an extract is measured against, so a printed minimum percentage states the concentration of the extract used. The NCCIH page on ashwagandha gives general background on the plant. Both rows carry a dagger because no Daily Value has been set for either.

The three vitamins. Vitamin B-6 is declared at 2 mg (118% DV) and supplied as pyridoxine HCl. Folate is declared at 680 mcg DFE, with the panel stating in the same row that this comes from 400 mcg of folic acid, at 170% DV; DFE stands for dietary folate equivalents, the unit U.S. panels use for folate. Vitamin B-12 is declared at 60 mcg as methylcobalamin, which works out at 2500% DV, by a wide margin the highest percentage printed on this label. Background on two of the three is published by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements: Vitamin B12 and Folate.

The four minerals. Iodine is declared at 225 mcg (150% DV) from potassium iodide. Zinc is declared at 25 mg (227% DV) from L-OptiZinc®, which the panel defines on the same line as a zinc L-methionine complex and which the bottle records as a Lonza trademark. Selenium is declared at 50 mcg (91% DV) from L-selenomethionine, and copper at 1 mg (111% DV) from a copper amino acid chelate. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements publishes consumer fact sheets on zinc and selenium. Of the seven percentages printed, selenium’s 91% is the only one below 100.

What makes up the rest of the capsule. The Other Ingredients line names four items, transcribed in full in the table above. Hypromellose is the shell itself, a cellulose-derived material rather than gelatin, which is what the “Veg Capsules” wording on the front refers to. The panel assigns no role to the remaining three, so neither do we.

How to use it

The label’s Suggested Usage reads: “Take 2 capsules daily, preferably in divided doses with food.” The label sets no particular times of day, and neither do we. The bottle also prints a storage line: “Store in a cool, dry place after opening.”

Who it’s for

This is a dietary supplement for adults 18 and over, and the bottle says so plainly: “For adults only.” It is a nine-ingredient multi-nutrient formula rather than a single-nutrient product, so it suits someone who already knows which of these vitamins, minerals and the one free-form amino acid they want, and would rather read them off one panel than assemble several bottles. A 180-capsule bottle is the size to choose when you know the formula and want a long interval between reorders. The bottle is explicitly not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. It is also listed under Health & Wellness.

Good to know

The caution printed on the bottle reads, in full: “For adults only. Not recommended for pregnant/nursing women. Consult physician if taking medication (especially taking thyroid, mood-altering, and central nervous system depressing medications), or have a medical condition (especially diagnosed thyroid conditions or ulcers). May cause mild transient GI upset. Discontinue use if GI symptoms persist. Discontinue use if rash/itching occurs. Keep out of reach of children.”

  • Appearance. The bottle prints “Natural color variation may occur in this product.”
  • Origin. The panel reads “Made and quality tested in the USA with globally sourced ingredients.”
  • Marks on the pack. The front carries a Non-GMO mark; the side carries a “GMP Quality Assured” roundel, with no certifying agency named on the bottle itself. The panel also prints “Family owned since 1968.”
  • The container. The bottle states that it “is made from 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) resin.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How many capsules make a serving, and how many servings are in the bottle?

Two veg capsules make one serving, and the panel declares 90 servings in this 180-capsule bottle. Every amount printed on the panel — the 1 g of L-tyrosine, the 225 mcg of iodine, all of it — is the amount in those two capsules together, not in one.

What does “preferably in divided doses with food” actually mean?

It means taking the two capsules at separate points in the day, each one alongside a meal rather than on an empty stomach. That is the wording printed on the bottle under Suggested Usage, and it does not change the daily total, which stays at two capsules.

Are the capsules suitable for vegetarians?

The capsule shell contains no gelatin — it is hypromellose, a cellulose-derived material, which is why the front of the bottle reads “180 Veg Capsules”. The bottle does not print a certified vegan or vegetarian mark, so we state the shell material rather than a certification.

Does this contain common allergens?

The label declares none of the nine major allergens as ingredients: it states the product is “not manufactured with wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nut or sesame ingredients”. The same statement immediately adds that it is “produced in a GMP facility that processes other ingredients containing these allergens”, and both halves are worth reading if you have a serious allergy.

How is the order packaged for delivery?

Orders ship in plain outer packaging with no product imagery and nothing on the outside describing the contents. It will not show the Gear Isle name. The bottle inside is the standard retail bottle shown in the photographs on this page.
