What VigoZen Super 5000 is

VigoZen Super 5000 is a men's herbal dietary supplement sold as one capsule, sealed in a clear blister on a printed card. The 340 mg proprietary blend groups nine items together without breaking out individual amounts, which is how the manufacturer has chosen to declare it. It lists Epimedium sagittatum, a flowering plant long used in traditional Chinese herbal practice; Coleus forskohlii, a root from a member of the mint family that appears in Ayurvedic preparations; maca extract, from a root vegetable cultivated at high altitude in the Peruvian Andes; niacin, better known as vitamin B3; ginkgo leaf extract, taken from Ginkgo biloba, one of the oldest surviving tree species on earth; zinc, an essential trace mineral; stinging nettle; Cnidium monnieri, a seed used in traditional Chinese formulas; and Butea superba, a climbing vine native to Thailand. Tribulus terrestris, 100 mg. A low-growing plant found across warm regions worldwide, sometimes called puncture vine after its spiked seed cases. It is one of the more common botanicals in men's supplement formulas.

Catuaba, 100 mg. Bark from trees native to the Brazilian rainforest, used in Brazilian folk preparations and usually sold as a dried bark extract.

Xanthoparmelia scabrosa, 100 mg. Not a plant at all, but a lichen — an organism formed from a fungus and an alga living together. It is an unusual inclusion and is rarely seen outside this product category.

L-Arginine, 100 mg. An amino acid that occurs naturally in everyday foods such as nuts, seeds, fish, poultry and dairy. The body also makes its own.

Saw palmetto extract, 100 mg. Drawn from the berry of a fan palm that grows wild across the south-eastern United States. The NCCIH saw palmetto page gives general background on the plant.

Damiana extract, 50 mg. A small aromatic shrub from Central and South America, traditionally prepared as a tea or used to flavour liqueurs.

The vitamins. Vitamin B-1 (thiamin), B-2 (riboflavin) and B-6 are each declared at 20 mg, and vitamin E at 50 I.U. Niacin also appears separately, inside the proprietary blend. The NIH publishes a consumer fact sheet on vitamin E for anyone who wants to read about that nutrient in general terms.

How to use it

The directions printed on the card read: as a dietary supplement, take one capsule 2–3 hours prior to sexual activity, with water. The card's caution line is equally specific and should be read alongside it: do not use more than one capsule in any 60-hour period. That figure is a ceiling set by the manufacturer, not a schedule to work towards.
